Role play

Moving on to the next task. The students were asked to write a role play, inspired by "our song"
First of all we assign them their roles based on the MI theory and explain their responsibilities (who is going to do what). We also give them some script guidlines ( i.g. use conditionals, specific vocabulary, idioms and collocations).
Students create the characters first and set the scene:

Jason: rich, went to private school, just finished high school, only-child, strict dad, loving mom, tennis, Harvard, wants to be a lawyer, out-going, sociable, popular with girls, selfish, arrogant

Vicky: one brother, middle class, public school, studies on local college, medicine, shy, intelligent, hard-working, friendly, sensitive

They met at a party last Christmas.

Scene takes place at their favorite spot – park, sitting on a bench.

Jason is leaving to Harvard – Vicky is staying in Greece

And then the story begins:

J. Baby, I have been struggling to tell you sth all night long. We need to talk about our future.

V. What’s the matter? What do you mean?

J. I have some news to tell you, but I don’t know where to begin.

V. You are scaring me. What’s wrong?

J. Well, my father has announced to me where I am going to study.

V. And where is that?

J. I have been accepted to Harvard.

V. Great news? When are you leaving?

J. Tomorrow!

V. What? Are you kidding me? Why didn’t you tell me before?!!

J. I was afraid of your reaction. I didn’t know how to put it in words…

V. And did you really think that telling me about it at the very last minute would make things better?

J. I know it’s my fault but there’s no point in arguing now. The thing is … what are we going to do?

V. (sobbing)

J. (hugs her) – Come on now, love. Don’t worry; we’ll get through this together!

V. But how can we be together since you will be that far away?

J. I’ll try to come as often as possible.

V. But we both know that’s not going to happen…

J. Don’t tell me that it’s over!

V. There’s no other way; we’re at a dead end!

J. I love you; I don’t want to break up with you…

V. You know that long distance relationships never work.

J. Then, that was it… It’s our last night together. I’ll never forget you. How could I?

V. (hugging- Kissing) – I’ll miss you.

Jason walks away

V. (shouts) Take Care!!

(After a while)

V. (whispering) I love you! I always will!

Next Christmas

Dear Vicky,

It’s been ages since we last talked. I hope you are all fine and life treats you well. Actually, the reason I am writing is to tell you that I have never stopped thinking about you. If you still feel the same about me, give me a chance!

Always yours,

Jason <3
