Musical Inteligence

This is a listening activity which is slightly different to what we normally use in our classrooms. Instead of having students looking for words, we have decided to use instumental music which brings our feelings into the surface.

The actual activity is to have students listen to the soundtrack, ask them what kind of movie it is, what scene it fits in and also how do they feel when listening to the particular piece.

Surprisingly, what we have noticed is that students who were extremely reluctunt to participate - especially the ones with high musical intelligence - found it easier to engage in a coversation following this activity.
You can easily see thatit's a warm-up, but students feel more at ease since they don't have to give long answers and they can put into practice vocabulary they already know. (especially words describing feelings)

Other activities you can create are:

  • Teach vocabulary through words that rhyme (Agreeable-foreseeable) / Ask students to create poems/stories that rhyme
  • Create music through teaching the colors and numbers look here
  • Play clips of songs belonging to different genres in class and ask students to write down how each clip makes them feel.
  • Rewrite the lyrics of their favourite song
  • Play sounds that accompany words. Give students the words in the order they heard them and then present the sounds in a mixed order (Students have to put the words in the correct order based on the sounds they hear)
You can also find some more activities that have to do with music in our blogs:
