We are thrilled to announce that we will participate in the 20th International TESOL Macedonia-Thrace Convention as well as the 34th TESOL Greece Annual Convention. Our new workshop is called "It's only rock'n'roll but I like it!" and focuses on music! What you can find below is the summary and abstract of the workshop! We hope to see you all there!

Summary

Have you grown tired of the same gap-filling exercises? Let’s swing together to the rhythm of rock music and exploit a wealth of activities you can use in your class. Get ready to develop your language skills as you are about to embark on a journey of inspiration and creation.

Abstract

This workshop mainly focuses on music, its great importance in our everyday lives and the ways songs can be incorporated in our lessons. Teaching with authentic materials, especially songs, isn’t a new addition in the world of EFL; most educators use songs as part of their teaching strategy and coursebooks are filled with level-appropriate songs for students to enjoy. However, the majority of such listening activities is limited to gap-filling or matching exercises. Consequently, students are rarely given the opportunity to explore what the song is truly about and examine the songwriter’s perception of the world.

The main purpose of today’s presentation is to show you techniques on how you can relate students to songs in order to raise their awareness of several issues. Apart from having a class discussion on the song topic, we will also present creative writing prompts as we feel it is important to give students the opportunity to see a topic in a new light. In addition, we will demonstrate some alternative listening activities that could be used as ways of introducing grammar, reading and vocabulary. In order to achieve this, we have decided to use visual stimuli as well as drama elements. Since this is a workshop, you will have the opportunity to get actively involved in these activities and experiment with them before using them in your lessons.
